BS EN ISO 140-4

BS EN ISO 140-4:1998 (Replace by 16283-1:2014)

Specifies field methods for measuring the airborne sound insulation properties of interior walls, floors and doors between two rooms under diffuse sound field conditions.

The methods give values for airborne sound insulation which are frequency dependent. They can be converted into a single number, characterizing the acoustic performance, by application of ISO 717-1.

The results obtained can be used to compare sound insulation between rooms and to compare actual sound insulation with specified requirements.

Reverberation Time Measurement – BS EN ISO 354

In a room with highly reflecting surfaces, such as a bathroom, the reverberation time is relatively long, while in an anechoic chamber where all the walls, the ceiling and the floor are covered by a highly absorbent material, the reverberation time is nearly zero. The absorption of different materials varies widely with the frequency of the incident sound and the angle of incidence. It follows that the reverberation time is liable to vary with frequency. Generally, the reverberation time is longer at lower frequencies because these are usually less effectively absorbed than higher frequency.

It is important that the reverberation time suits the intended use of the room. Too long a reverberation time renders speech less intelligible and music more cacophonous and produces higher background noise levels. A short reverberation time deadens background noise, but muffles speech and makes music sound thin and staccato.

Test Report – Determination of Single Rating Number BS EN ISO 717

Defines single-number quantities for airborne sound insulation in buildings and of building elements such as walls, floors, doors and windows.

Takes into consideration the different sound level spectra of various noise sources such as noise sources inside a building and traffic outside a building.

Give rules for determining these quantities from the results of measurements carried out in one-third octave or octave bands in accordance with ISO 140-3, ISO 140-4, ISO 140-5, ISO 140-9 and ISO 140-10.
